The hidden cost of big sports events
What happens after the Olympic flame goes out? Or when the final whistle blows at the World Cup? You might think of medals and cheers, but there’s a hidden side to these giant events — one that affects our planet.
Big sports events can create a lot of pollution. Think about all the people flying in from around the world, the energy used to light up huge stadiums, and the tons of waste from food packaging and plastic bottles. For example, the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil produced as many carbon emissions as hundreds of thousands of cars would in a year! And in Qatar, where water is very rare, during the 2022 World Cup, a huge amount of water was used every day just to keep the football fields green.
Fortunately, some countries are trying to change this. Beijing 2022 was the first Winter Olympics to be carbon-neutral. This means it did not cause extra harm to the climate. All the venues (场地) used green energy, like wind and solar power, instead of regular electricity. Beijing even saved old buildings from the 2008 Games to reuse for the new events. For example, the Water Cube was turned into the Ice Cube.
In Paris, France, the 2024 Olympic Games set out with the ambitious (有雄心的) goal of becoming the greenest ever. To achieve this, the organisers built fewer new stadiums and used existing ones. The Games were powered by 100% renewable electricity. Even the beds in the Olympic Village were made from recyclable cardboard!
In the United States, Los Angeles is getting ready for the 2028 Olympics. They plan to use electric buses to carry athletes and visitors. No gas, no smoke — just clean travel.
Big games don’t have to hurt the Earth. With smart ideas and care, we can enjoy sports and protect our planet at the same time. Maybe one day, you’ll help design a zero-waste stadium. What green idea would you bring to the sports world?
