四、阅读理解。
Holmes and I left the old house and walked to the village and paid for a room in Crown Hotel. As we sat waiting in the room until night, Holmes asked me if I had noticed anything strange in the rooms.
“The fake(假的) bell rope for one thing,” I said.
“Yes. And I knew that before we left Baker Street, we should find a ventilator(换气扇),” he said.
“How, Holmes? That's amazing!” I shouted.
“Not really. Helen Stoner said that her sister could smell the smoke from Dr Roylott, so I knew there had to be a hole of some kind between the two rooms.”
“Of course,” I said. “But how does that help to solve the mystery of her death?”
“Think, Watson. A fake bell rope and a meaningless ventilator were put in the room at the same time, and soon after a woman died in the room.”
“It is certainly a strange coincidence(巧合),” I said.
“Watson, it's not a coincidence at all. And did you notice that the bed in the room is fixed to the floor? It cannot be moved. Have you ever seen a bed fixed to a floor like that?”
I had to agree that I had not.
“There is a great danger here, Watson,” Holmes went on. “The doctor is a man, and he is planning to commit another crime. We must wait for developments.”
