On January 28, 2025, a special performance called Yang BOT amazed audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala.
Directed by famous film-maker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology. In the performance, humanoid robots dressed in colourful costumes danced yangko, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals.
One of the most fantastic moments came when the robots showed their ability to control handkerchiefs, a signature part of yangko dance. They turned the handkerchiefs quickly and formed creative group patterns. With precise(精准的) mechanical arm movements, the robots sent the handkerchiefs turning and rising in the air, creating a surprising visual performance that symbolized the perfect mixture of tradition and modernity.
These robots were developed by Unitree(宇树科技), a Chinese robotics company. This was not Unitree's first success—in 2021, their robot cows named “Ben Ben(犇犇)” danced as backup for singer Andy Lau (Liu Dehua). The robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation(激光导航) to move safely on the stage. Their strong joints helped them balance perfectly during fast steps.
Zhang Yimou explained, “This dance isn't just fun—it shows how technology can bring new life to traditions.” Thanks to these creative minds and ways, the robots won the hearts of millions.
On social media, topics like “Robot Yangko” spread quickly. Young viewers called it “cool” while older audiences loved its humour and festive spirits. The Yang BOT programme is a perfect mix of China's technological progress and cultural pride. As one fan said, “It's like watching the future and past dance together!”
