During the Spring Festival holiday in 2024, YOLO was one of the most popular films in China. However, after watching the film myself, a question crossed my mind: Does its success necessarily mean it's a quality film?
In the film, the lead character Du Leying achieves physical fitness and finds her confidence after taking up boxing. Behind the scenes, the film director who also played the role of Du, lost about 50 kilograms while filming.
The film's marketing featured the weight loss of an actress for promotional purposes, which made losing weight a trending topic. However, I believe this is nothing more than a publicity stunt(宣传噱头). Losing weight is not that much of an accomplishment, especially for professional actors.
Apart from its marketing, the film has some flaws in its plot and humour. Using weight loss as a source of humour may hurt people who struggle with obesity(肥胖症). I believe the film's approach to this theme lacks sensitivity.
Besides, as far as I can see, the character's motivation to fight comes not from the love for boxing but rather the desire to win, which shows a lack of true sportsmanship. Plus, the film shows the lead character's change from a nice and warm personality to a more cold and indifferent one by the end. Encouraging kind people to turn into indifferent bystanders is not a positive value that we should promote.
I believe that a successful film should be more inclusive(兼收并蓄的) in terms of gender-related trends and tell stories that are more true to life.
