The idea that you can smile your way to happiness has a very long history. Back in the 1800s, Charles Darwin was among the first to come up
with
the idea that smiling can make you happier. But researchers are now finding
a
new result.
Recently the researchers
provided
(provide) 50 years of data to show that smiling improves happiness only by a little. Their result suggests that if 100 people smiled, only about seven might expect to feel happier.
“Maybe there are different kinds of smiles with different
reasons
(reason),”says Paula Niedenthal, an expert at a university. “But it depends on
whether
they are true smiles of joy or not.”Also, they’ve found that forcing to smile can influence(影响) your health
heavily
(heavy). For example, service workers who were forced to smile all day may lead to heavy drinking. This always
causes
(cause) a higher risk of health problems and makes things worse.
“Maybe, it’s not good
to force
(force) people to smile when they are not feeling good.” Niedenthal says,“Because, I know when I am sad and people tell
me
to smile, it just makes me feel even
angrier
(angry). ”And just as the researcher says, “Smiling is notgoing to make any important difference in our life.”
