Hunting in the desert
Do you know what the animal in the picture is? It is not an everyday cat! In the Dagu Glacier Scenic Area, people took the photo of a wild desert cat（荒漠猫）on Oct 19, 2023. Let’s find out more about this rare（稀有的）animal!

Habitat
This desert cat is Chinese! You can find it in places like Gansu, Shaanxi and Qinghai. It’s called a desert cat, but it doesn’t just hang out（出没）in deserts. It even lives way up high in the mountains in Sichuan, around 3000 meters up. So it has another name: Chinese mountain cat. It likes doing things at night and mainly likes to have pikas（鼠兔）and rabbits for its meals.
Characteristics
The desert cat is bigger than the pet cats. Its body is about 60–80 cm long and its tail is about 23–35 cm long. It weighs around 4–8 kg. It has long ears and legs. The colour on its back is brownish gray（褐灰色）or sandy yellow（沙黄色）.
Protection
At the Dagu Glacier Scenic Area, people are watching big and medium-sized mammals（哺乳动物）to keep them safe. So far, they’ve looked into 29 species（物种）of key protected animals in the country. Nine of them have the first level（级）of protection.
Rarity
China has two remarkable carnivores（食肉动物）under top-level protection: the desert cat and the giant panda. Both of them are now Class I protected animals due to their vulnerability（易受危害性）.
