“沂源红”模式的养老新路径
In the mountainous Yiyuan County of Shandong Province，there is a small community canteen in Houjiaguanzhuang Village. Every day，a group of old people get together there to have lunch. The dishes are all served by red-vested volunteers for the bargain price of just one yuan.
This canteen is one of around 230 “Yiyuanhong” service places. They are set up in many faraway villages and towns in Yiyuan County to help old people. And Yiyuan has a large number of old people plus many mountains，so it’s a typical example of the challenges our country meets.
The “Yiyuanhong” elderly care model started in 2021. It tries to meet the needs of local old people through many community care centres and special services.
Zhuang Benzhen，the Party secretary of Houjiaguanzhuang Village，said，“The county，the town and the village each give money to help cut the meal costs. That’s why old people only need to pay very little for their meals. ”
For Houjiaguanzhuang Village，its part of the money comes from its 33-hectare apple orchard. Many old villagers can’t work on their farmland anymore. So they have given the right to use their land to a cooperative（合作社）. This cooperative is run by the village Party，and it now manages the land.
Zhuang said，“In the orchard，we have planted new kinds of trees. These trees can produce more fruits. ” He also added that the money the orchard makes pays for most of the care centre’s running costs.
The “Yiyuanhong” model focuses on “farming for farmers and caring for the elderly”，Zhuang said，noting that the county has turned the double challenges of elderly care and farmland abandonment into an opportunity.
