Most of Julie's friends’ parents drank coffee. Some of them liked tea too; but not like her parents did. Jill's family, Billy's family and Tanya's family each had just two or three boxes of tea on a shelf, but Julie's had a whole cabinet(橱柜)for tea. No tea bags in boxes either; her parents drank tea leaves only. "The real tea," her dad called it.
Every Chinese New Year, her parents would have a traditional tea ceremony—"Cha Dao" in Chinese. Her mum said it was an important cultural tradition, but Julie just thought it was B-O-R-I-N-G.
However, now that she was 13. Julie felt different. She decided it was time this New Year to take an interest in her own family and cultural history she actually knew very little about. She only visited her grandparents in China once when she was five years old.
"Why do we have to do this tea ceremony every year? And why do you always say that drinking tea is part of your DNA?" Julie asked her mother.
"Well, the DNA thing is a figure of speech(比喻)," Julie's mother replied. She walked to the bookshelf, and pulled out a yellow and red book The Classic of Tea: Origins & Rituals(《茶经:起源与仪式》), written by Lu Yu. "This book is all about how tea is grown, how the leaves are processed(处理), and things like that. I advise you to read this instead of wasting your time with all that TV."
"I watch nothing but Tea TV," Julie joked.
"Right. Well, in the book, Yu describes the tea trees in South China. Back in those days, they would compress(压缩)tea leaves into little cakes—not like a birthday cake, just a little brick of leaves. They'd add hot water to make the drink we know as tea, and the Chinese call..."
"Cha," Julie smiled. Cha was one of a few Chinese words Julie learnt. "Then what about the ceremonies?"
"Well, a Chinese tea ceremony is not just drinking of tea, but a way for families to connect. It's also about peace and enjoyment."
