Qixi Festival (the Double Seventh Festival), also known as Qiqiao Festival and Chinese Valentine's Day(情人节), falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month.
According to historical records, Qixi Festival was popular in the Han Dynasty and reached its peak in the Song Dynasty.
Qixi Festival is closely related(密切相关) to the folk(民间) love story of Niu Lang and Zhi Nyu. According to the legend, Zhi Nyu met Niu Lang after she ran away from the Heaven and went down to the Earth. They fell in love, got married(结婚) and lived a happy life. Niu Lang worked in the field and Zhi Nyu wove(织布). Later the Emperor of Heaven heard the news and he was so angry that he forced(迫使) Zhi Nyu to go back to the Heaven. After that, the couple(夫妻) couldn't see each other until the seventh day of the seventh lunar month every year. On that day, magpies(喜鹊) gathered to build a bridge(桥) on the Milky Way, so the couple could meet.
Looking up at the clear sky, we can see two bright stars on both sides of the Milky Way: the Vega(Zhi Nyu Star) and the Altair(Niu Lang Star). It is said that at Qixi Festival, under the grapevine(葡萄藤), people can hear Niu Lang and Zhi Nyu talking.
There are many customs at Qixi Festival, including watching the stars to make a wish, ladies doing needlework(针线活) by moonlight to pray for wisdom, letting spiders spin webs in a case to pray for luck, and so on.
