Boya Juexian is a well-known story in Chinese music history. It happened during the Spring-Autumn Period. Boya was an excellent musician (音乐家). He was good at playing the guqin. He hoped for someone to understand his music.
Boya often played the guqin in the wild. One day by a river, he met Zhong Ziqi. Boya started playing the music inspired by morning mist (雾). The music was soft at first. Ziqi closed his eyes and said he could see the mist rolling in as if he were in that scene (景象). Boya was surprised by Ziqi’s understanding.
Later in autumn, Boya played a piece about the changing leaves. The music was sad and graceful (优雅的). Ziqi listened and said it was like a poem of autumn, which has the feeling of leaves saying goodbye. Boya shared his feelings on how he got inspired by the leaves.
One day, Ziqi died. Boya was so sad about it that he felt as if he lost his other half. He broke his guqin because he thought that no one else in the world could truly understand his musical language like Ziqi did.
This story shows the deep friendship between them, reminding us to value those who truly “hear” us in our lives.
