Guqin: A Musical Instrument That Links the Past With the Present
In ancient China, all gentlemen were expected to be skilful in four separate arts. They were qin, qi, shu, hua, or the string music instrument, chess(go), calligraphy, and painting.
1 The Chinese people believe that it was invented by Fuxi, a hero of the mythological period in ancient China. The instrument has a history of more than 5,000 years. It has always been considered the top-ranking musical instrument in China. 2 People started to call the instrument guqin to distinguish(区分) it from the piano.
The ancient guqin is believed to have measured three chi, six cun and five fen (about 136 centimeters) in length. This represented the 365 days of the year. According to ancient documents, guqin originally had five strings. 3 The original five strings symbolize the five elements, Jin, Mu, Shui, Huo, and Tu, They were also believed to represent the five tunes, Gong, Shang, Jue, Zhi, and Yu.
4 This means that the instrument is designed to be performed in quiet settings. Guqin playing has long been seen as an elite(精英的) art form. It's also called the "instrument of the sages(圣贤)." For example, Confucius was himself a great master of this instrument. But the best-known player of the guqin in its 5,000 years of history was none other than Yu Boya. The famous Chinese idiom "high mountains and flowing water" comes from the story of Yu Boya and his friend Zhong Ziqi.
Nowadays, learning how to play the instrument is no longer a special right that is granted(授予) to the upper class alone. It is not hard to take a training class. 5
