A woman spreads a rumour（谣言）about one of her neighbours. Then, the whole village knows the story. The neighbour feels sad.
Later, the woman learns that the story about her neighbour is not true. She wants to do something to show her neighbour that she is sorry. However, she doesn't know what to do, so she goes to visit an old man for some advice.
Knowing her story, the old man asks her to do this, “Go to the market, buy a chicken, and kill it. Then on your way home, pluck（拔）its feathers（羽毛）and drop（丢）them one by one along the road.” The woman is surprised by this advice, but she still does what she was told. The next day, the old man says, “Now go to find all of those feathers you dropped and bring them back to me.”
The woman follows the same road, but to her surprise, the wind has blown the feathers away. After a few hours, she only finds three feathers.
“You see,” says the old man, “after you spread a rumour, it's impossible to get it back.”
