In New York, there is a special place called the Chinese Theatre Works(CTW). Here, the artists perform beautiful Chinese puppet shows. They mix old Chinese traditions with new American ideas.
Two people founded the CTW. They are Kuang-Yu Fong from China and Stephen from America. They use hand-carved puppets, silk costumes, and bright lights to tell Chinese stories. Some puppets are very old. Some puppets are new.
Charlie is a young artist who works here. He says, “Puppetry is very playful. Puppets are like toys that come alive! They make me feel like a child again.” Charlie learned about Chinese puppets on the Internet and came to help. He loves the old Chinese traditions. Another worker, Chen Xiuyuan, saves old puppet shows on computers. “These stories are too precious to lose,” he says. He makes sure children in the future can see them too.
The shows mix Chinese and Western styles. They tell Chinese stories in English. In one show, they use projectors(投影仪) to make shadow puppets look wonderful.
Kuang-Yu Fong and Stephen got married some years ago. They love working together. Stephen says Chinese puppetry seemed strange at first, but now he thinks it’s so fun and loves it very much. They believe old traditions and new ideas can be friends.
The artists' most popular role in their puppet shows is the Monkey King. Children in New York laugh and clap when they see it. Some of them love Chinese culture because of it. The artists hope to keep sharing Chinese stories with everyone.
