Boya and Ziqi
By the rushing riverbank, Yu Boya’s fingers moved gracefully across his guqin. The music rose like high peaks and flowed like rushing water. Many stopped to admire his skills, yet no one understood the feelings in his music.
Then, a voice cut through the air.
“Wonderful!” said a woodcutter, standing with an axe in his hands.
“When you play, I see Mount Tai — so high it almost touches the sky!”
Boya stopped playing. “You … you see it?”
The woodcutter, Zhong Ziqi smiled. “A musician’s heart speaks through his music. You don’t just play notes. You show us the world.”
Boya’s heart beat fast. No one had ever said anything like this before.
This time, Boya played faster. Ziqi’s face lit up. “Now it’s the river! So powerful, unstoppable, like ten thousand dragons roaring together!”
Boya was amazed. “How do you know?”
Ziqi smiled again. “When you play about water, I feel its rush. When you play about the wind, I sense its blowing. Your music isn’t just sound. It’s alive.”
At that moment, Boya knew that Ziqi heard his heart.
When Ziqi died, Boya stood at his grave, holding his guqin. He played one last song, full of sadness and memories. Then, he lifted the instrument high above his head.
CRACK!
It broke into pieces against the tombstone.
“No one left to hear me,” he whispered, “No more music to make.”
From that day, Boya never played again.
