Are you going through puberty? You might have started puberty earlier
than your parents did.
Puberty begins when your body tells your brain to produce a kind of hormone. During puberty, teenagers grow quickly.
Studies show that puberty is happening earlier. Take girls in the US for example.
They are getting their periods about six months earlier than they did many
years ago. The average age used to be 12.5 years old. But now it's just under 12.
Many things can cause early puberty. Being overweight is one of the key reasons.
This may be because fat cells produce oestrogen, which is important for
female body changes. Some unhealthy food as well as stress may also be the reasons.
Studies show that early puberty might increase the risk of health problems like
breast cancer and heart disease as well as shorter height. What's worse,
teenagers who start puberty earlier might feel angry. They might be treated differently
because they look older or different, which can make them lose confidence.
"Girls face more troubles," Ye Zihua from the University of Illinois Urbana-
Champaign told the German newspaper Die Welt. "This is because they pay more
attention to their bodies."
So how can we avoid early puberty? Doctors suggest that teenagers should eat
healthily, do some sports, and get enough sleep.
