Around the world there are many differences in the way people meet and greet each other. Most of us know about some different ways of greeting people, but what about some basic rules of body language? Sometimes you have to know when you're not supposed to point, stand near someone or move away. Even a simple head movement can mean different things to different people.
For example, in some parts of Italy and Greece people drop their heads back to communicate "no", rather than shake their heads. There are different ways to say "no" all around the world, such as winking (眨眼), shaking your hand or even putting your head on your right shoulder! If you visit India, it is important to make sure you understand all the different head movements, as they can sometimes be very confusing! There are head movements from side to side, up and down, back and forth and just to one side. People will get used to it after some time, but at first it can be very confusing.
Another part of body language we are expected to know about is personal space. In countries with large populations, it is common for people to stand very close to each other. People do not mind if their arms touch a stranger's arm. In other places, for example, Northern Europe, it is important to stay at least a meter away from another person. In countries like Sweden and Finland, people value their personal space, and it is considered impolite to stand very close, especially in public places like the bus or subway. In Southern Europe, however, people hug, hold each other's arms and stand much closer to one another.
Body language, like spoken language, is different everywhere so it is good to do your research before you visit a country!
