Maria Lopez was stirring soup and studying spelling words. Her mother was late getting home. Mother had a new job at Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Universal Studios is where movies and TV shows are made. Maria thought it was exciting that her mother worked for a TV producer.
Maria was practising spelling words for the spelling bee at school.
When her mother came home, Maria hugged her and asked, “Did you get tickets, so I can be on a TV show?” Maria wanted to be an actress. Maria dreamed of being on TV.
“Sorry, no. It is not easy to get tickets.” Mother poured the soup. “If I could get tickets, we would sit in the audience. Not be on the TV show.”
Maria sighed. She spelled, “U-N-F-A-I-R, unfair.”
Still, Maria hoped the camera would point at her. Then she could be on TV.
The next day, Maria took the bus to Universal Studios. She wanted to look for her mother. Maria didn't get on TV. She didn't see even one movie star. She spelled, “D-I-S-A-P-P-O-I-N-T-E-D, disappointed(失望的).”
“Maria! You cannot come to my workplace,” her mother said.
Maria went from being disappointed to being sad. She didn't want to get her mother in trouble. But now she might never be on TV.
The next day at school was the spelling bee. After many turns at spelling, Maria was the last one left. Maria won the school spelling bee!
When Maria got home, Mother had a surprise for Maria, too. She had tickets to watch a TV show! Maria hoped she could be on TV.
That night they went to the TV show. The camera never pointed at her. Maria didn't get to be on TV at all.
Then, Maria's teacher called. Maria would be in a bigger spelling bee with students from many schools! The spelling bee would be at the Convention Centre. And it would be on TV!
Maria jumped up and down happily. “H-O-O-R-A-Y!” Maria spelled. “Hooray!” She would be on TV after all!
At the spelling bee, Maria would make her mother proud. Maria would be on TV because she had worked hard. Maria ran and got her spelling word list. She needed to study her words just like an actress studied her lines.
