Cross-cultural Communication Tips
Keep a respectful distance until you get to know someone.
Different cultures have different ideas about personal space. Usually, it’s rude to stand or sit too close to a stranger. Keep an arm’s length away until you know what makes them comfortable. For example, Latin Americans may stand closer, but this may make others feel uncomfortable at first.
Speak slowly and deliberately.
Speak clearly when talking to someone whose first language isn’t your native language. Don’t raise your voice—just pronounce every word well and pause between sentences to help them understand.
Use simple, straightforward language.
Avoid metaphors, idioms and slang. Non-native speakers often understand words literally. Slang like “bombed”, “hit the books” or “ace” in a sentence may confuse them a lot.
Tone down gestures and hand signals.
Also, use proper posture. Keep your hands folded in front or at your sides. Hand gestures can cause trouble. Some gestures that are fine in your culture may be rude in others. For example, pointing at someone is impolite in many places, and a nod may mean “no” in some countries.
