Along the River During the Qingming Festival is a famous painting about ancient Chinese customs from the Northern Song Dynasty. It is known as one of the “Top Ten Famous Chinese Paintings of Ancient China.” The artwork shows the life and landscape of the capital city Dongjing (now Kaifeng) and the scenes(场景) along the Bianhe River.
The painting, made of silk, is 24.8 centimeters wide and 528.7 centimeters long. On the painting, it is said that there are 587 people, more than 60 animals, over 20 wooden boats, and more than 30 houses. It is so pretty that people take pride in it.
With the scroll(卷轴) unfolded, the first thing catching the eye is the early spring scenery in Dongjing: trees budding and small rivers flowing. In the mist(雾霭), two people drive the donkeys forward along the village path. Among the villages and houses, some travelers hurry on their way on foot, some on horseback and some in sedan chairs(轿子). All these details come to life as you study the painting closely.
At the end of the quiet country road comes the middle part, where an arched bridge(拱桥) stretches across the Bianhe River. On the river, several ships are sailing. On the shore, there are tea houses, restaurants and shops selling different goods. This busy scene forms the central part of the whole painting.
The last part shows the downtown streets of Dongjing. You can find all kinds of shops and the traffic seems endless. During festivals, the city would be filled with a special fever of excitement.
Besides being a work of art, it also serves as an important historical record. It is valuable for people to understand and study the life of that period. Today, a digital multimedia version of this painting has been created so that more people can enjoy its beauty and learn from its details.
