Bayi was a very greedy(贪婪的) rich man. He loved money more than anything. One day, he saw his clever neighbour Avanti planting something. Bayi was very curious(好奇的) and shouted,“Avanti! What are you doing there?”
Avanti pretended(假装) to be scared. “Master(老爷), I... I'm planting gold coins!” he said slowly. Bayi didn't think it was true, but his greed made him curious. He took out a gold coin. “Plant mine too!” he ordered. “When they grow, you can get half of them!”
A week later, Avanti visited Bayi's house with a big smile. He gave Bayi five gold coins. “Master, your coin grew into ten coins! Here's your half.”
Bayi quickly caught the coins and counted them twice. Then he took back a small bag. Inside were twenty gold coins! “Plant all these now!” he said. “Remember—half for me when they grow!”
Another week later, Avanti walked slowly to Bayi's house, looking at the ground. “What's wrong?” Bayi asked.
Avanti looked sad. “Master, there was no rain for seven days. All your gold coins... they dried up and died.” He opened the bag—nothing!
Bayi's face turned red. He opened his mouth but couldn't speak.
