You must have read or heard about the sad love story of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu. But can you imagine the two performing in an English opera instead of speaking beautiful Chinese?
Jia and Lin are two main characters from the great Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions, written by Cao Xueqin. As one of China’s Four Great Classics, the book has a great influence on many later writers. Now this novel has been turned into an English opera. After it was shown in San Francisco, the US, it was also performed in Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan.
Many creators of the opera know both Chinese and American cultures well, such as the director and playwrights(剧作家). Their good understanding of the two cultures helped them turn a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The novel tells about the rise and fall of the Jia family. It has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But the opera writer David Henry Hwang cut the number of characters down to only seven. Hwang is a Chinese-American. He paid special attention to the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a sad story that people all over the world could understand.
Timmy Yip, the art director from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign viewers know the charac-ters better with costumes and stage settings. He thought Lin was like water, so he prepared a light green costume for her. When Lin appeared on the stage, there was often water around her.
The creators thought it was a meaningful job to bring a Chinese classic to Western people. Hwang told China Daily that he was glad to make a contribution to the place where his parents were born.
