In the past, a city's size was limited. That's because people could only travel a certain distance easily. A city's borders depended on how far people could walk or how far horses could take them. Then cars and other motor vehicles were invented. When people in cities could travel easily, more and more people lived in larger and larger city areas. Elevators were also invented. They let more people live in extremely tall buildings.
Today, new information and communication technologies are making cities grow to an all-new size. Smart technologies can check cities' situations at any time. They can report what's happening and find out problems. They can reduce, stop and even solve daily problems like traffic jams(拥挤). Sometimes they can do these things right away.
Nowadays, Tokyo Metropolitan Area(东京都市圈) has nearly 40 million people. People say it will stay the biggest for four more years, but it won't be the biggest forever. Some other super big cities are catching up fast. They all have more than 20 million people, like Delhi and Mumbai in India, Shanghai in China, São Paulo in Brazil and Mexico City in Mexico. By 2030, people think there will be 43 such super big cities in the world.
The fastest-growing cities are medium-sized cities in Asia and Africa. Some new super big cities will come from small ones. These small cities now have fewer than one million people. Will the population of any of them grow to over 40 million one day? Will one of them become the next biggest city in the world?
