What is science fiction? It's created according to future or scientific discoveries. However, Chinese science fiction writer Hai Ya takes a different path. He connects many of writings with Chinese culture and history. One of them is The Space-Time Painter. The novel won the Hugo Award（雨果奖）, the world's top science fiction prize.
Hai Ya got the idea for the novel after learning about a famous painting One Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains. Wang Ximeng, a talented Song-dynasty painter, created it at the age of 18. But he died young and not much is known about him. This "gap(空白)" in history gave Hai Ya the space and freedom to create the novel.
Hai Ya created a painter named Zhao Ximeng. His life experience is much like that of Wang Ximeng. When creating the story, Hai Ya not only used his imagination but also studied history with care. He tried to mix Chinese culture with science fiction.
