Typhoon Mara hits Seaview Village

SEAVIEW, 10 June — Last Friday, Typhoon Mara brought strong winds and heavy rain to Seaview Village. The storm lasted 12 hours, with wind speed up to 120 km/h. Many homes were destroyed, trees fell down, and the streets were flooded. The village was without power for three days. Older villagers said it was one of the worst storms in years. Carlos, a 52-year-old fisherman, shared his experience. "... it all happened so fast. The waves were really huge and, um, they destroyed my fishing dock (码头) first. Then, water started coming into our house — like, really quickly. We didn't even have time to pack anything. So, my wife and I took our kids and ran to the bathroom. We stayed there for hours. But still, I feel lucky. We're all safe, and that's what matters." At the village school, now a shelter, 14-year-old Linda said, "First we heard loud noises, and then the windows broke. My mother took us to our neighbour's basement." Her younger brother still feels scared when it rains. Over 50 families are staying at the shelter. Doctors say many children are having trouble sleeping after the storm. Weather experts believe the ocean near Seaview is getting warmer, which may make storms stronger. This was already the third big storm this year. Now, the village is working to recover. Students are using social media to collect clothes and food. Fishermen are fixing boats. "The storm hit us hard," Carlos says, "but we will rebuild together."
