In China, there was a great man named Yang Shanzhou. He was born in Yunnan Province in 1927. He worked as a leader in his hometown for many years. After he retired（退休） in 1988, he saw that the land in his hometown, Yunnan Province, was becoming dry and lifeless. So he didn’t choose to live an easy life in the city. He decided to plant trees to save the land. For over 20 years, he worked hard and planted thousands of trees. His efforts turned barren（贫瘠的） hills into a green forest. Although he faced challenges like poor soil and lack of resources（资源）, he never gave up. His work not only improved the environment but also inspired many people to protect nature.
Throughout the world, women play an important role in environmental protection.And in China, there is a large group of women taking part in protecting the environment. Yin Yuzhen is one of them. She is a national heroine for fighting sandstorms in the desert of Inner Mongolia.When Yin arrived at the desert after she was married, she was scared by the wild conditions. But at last, she decided to do something to make the environment better. Fifteen years later, her dreams have come true. Together with her husband, she has planted more than 300,000 trees to prevent the sand from moving towards their village. At the same time, she tried her best to keep her village out of poverty（贫困） and to help them live a better life. In 2002, Yin Yuzhen received the China Environment Prize, the top honor in China for those who have made significant contributions to environmental protection in the country.
She said, “What I have done is just like a drop of water in the ocean. I would like to continue to plant trees for the rest of my life. My only wish is to turn the whole desert into a green oasis.”
