Different lakes have different colours. A study in 2020 shows that around one third of the world's lakes are blue. But global(全球的) warming may turn them to green or even brown.
Xiao Yang from SMU in the US and his team looked at the colour of over 85,000 lakes based on their satellite photos from 2013 to 2020. They found that lakes in places with cooler average(平均的) summer temperatures were more likely to be blue than lakes in places with warmer summers.
The study said that water molecules(分子) absorb(吸收) the long wavelengths from the sunlight, such as red, orange and yellow. They leave behind the short ones. This makes a lake look green and blue. So the cleaner the water is, the bluer it looks.
In warmer lakes, algae(水藻) and phytoplanktons(浮游植物) grow easily. Their colours are green and even brown. They give the lake a different colour. If the temperature goes on rising because of climate change, the study said that one in ten blue lakes might change colour.
Humans get their drinking water from lakes, streams and groundwater. As lakes become greener, people may lose lots of clean water. Because of this, treating the water of such lakes becomes more expensive.
At the same time, blue lakes are also a place to play. Catherine O'Reilly, a co-author of the study, says some people considered blue lakes as a refuge(避难所) or spiritual(精神上的) place. As these blue lakes disappear, they may feel sad.
For lake animals, the development of algae and phytoplanktons in greener lakes can provide more food. But more algae and phytoplanktons mean less oxygen(氧气) for the lake animals, and this may kill them.
1. How does the temperature affect lake colours?______
2. What problems do greener lakes bring?______
3. What do you think of the situation of blue lakes disappearing? Why?______
