Jiaozi are a traditional Chinese food. Eating jiaozi is also a cultural custom during the Spring Festival. On the Chinese New Year's Eve (除夕夜), people make jiaozi. In China, zishi refers to the hours between 11 p.m. and 1 a.m., and jiao means "cross". It is said (据说) that people called the food jiaozi because they prepared it before midnight and ate it after midnight to celebrate the start of a new year.
