In 2017, the Palace Museum in Beijing showed the 900-year-old classical painting A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains (《千里江山图》). Gui Haowen went to see it. "I took a few photos with my phone, but they couldn't show its beauty," said Gui, a student at Tsinghua University.
Following this experience, she bought a camera, and her journey into cultural relic(文物) photography began.
However, Gui soon found that photographing in museums was not easy. Museums use dim lighting to protect the relics. As a result, she learned to use the environment. For example, while taking pictures of a lacquerware(漆器) relic, she took a photo from below with a museum light in the photo. The light looked like a glowing(发光的) moon. "I wanted to recreate the image(图像) of 'drinking with the moon' in Chinese poetry," she said.
So far, Gui has visited around 60 museums. Whenever she travels to a new city, a trip to the local museum is always the first thing she does.
In 2024, Gui began sharing her photography on social media(社交媒体). Most of her followers are between the ages of 25 and 34. She has noticed more interest in traditional culture among young people. "This shows a growing confidence in our own culture," she said.
Now, she plans to continue using her camera to tell more stories of Chinese cultural relics. She hopes to inspire even more young people to explore and appreciate traditional culture through her unique perspective.
