四、阅读理解
A light was flashing (闪光) in the window of the house across the street. Flash — flash — flash — flash — flash.
Mike was surprised. The family who lived in the house were on holiday. No one was supposed to be in that house.
The next day, Mike was thinking about the flashing light when he suddenly jumped up, “There it is again!” “That must be a signal (信号),” he thought. But who? And why? Mike planned to find out who was signaling. He ran out of his house and ran up the street a little way then crossed the street. When he got to the Johnsons' yard, he crouched down low to stay under the window. He was breathing(呼吸) hard and fast. Slowly he rose, just high enough to look in the window. He looked all around the room. No one was there.
“He must be in another room now,” he thought. Mike walked all around the house. However, the curtains (窗帘) were closed. The next two days, at the same time, a light flashed in the house across the street.
At exactly the same time the next day, Mike crouched down low under the window across the street. Slowly he rose up to look in the window. The light was flashing! Mike looked at it until the flashing stopped. Then he laughed aloud.
The flashing light was coming from a clock with a shiny brass pendulum (铜钟摆). The pendulum swing back and forth (来回), back and forth. It was just the reflection (反射) of the sunlight!
Mike laughed. He knew the secret of the flashing light.
