Superkid Heroes
① Becoming a Hero
Superheroes are characters in stories who use super power to save and protect people. Heroes in the real world do not have super power, but they do have special gifts. Often they are people who can think quickly, be brave and care for others in a difficult situation. Heroes come from all cultures, and age is not a problem to become a hero. Some are children. They are superkid heroes.
② Bravery Against the Odds(迎难而上): Asma Khan
In Mumbai, India, a terrible flood swept into the orphanage(孤儿院) where Asma Khan lived. A hundred terrified(受惊吓的)children cried in fear as the water rushed into their crowded space. If no action was taken, the children would all drown. Being the tallest, Asma did what a hero would do. She made trip after trip, carrying forty children to safety. The ground was slippery(湿滑的) and the water was black and dirty. Asma had to keep her head high, because this hero couldn't swim.
③ A Water Well(井): Ryan Hreljac
When Ryan was six years old, he learnt that clean drinking water was not available(可获得的) for every child in the world. This set Ryan on a mission(使命)to help raise money for people in Uganda, who had to walk many kilometres every day for clean water. Ryan began by doing extra housework at home, and then he gave talks to people, raising enough money to drill(钻) a well for the village.
④ A Bag of Maize Meal(玉米粉): Jordan Van der Walt
Jordan Van der Walt, 12, wanted to help poor children. He learned that about three million children in South Africa went to school hungry every day. So Jordan began an event, calling on his schoolmates to bring one bag of maize meal to school. The event collected nearly one hundred tons of maize meal, which fed over one million children.
⑤ Making a Difference
Many children have been brave, risking their lives, to save others. It also takes courage(勇气), however, to think of a way to help others. Many children are making a difference without asking for anything in return. They have made the world a better place. They are superkid heroes.
