One evening, as I read “The Little Mermaid” (《小美人鱼》) to my girl Jane, she asked, “Why can’t the mermaid just tell the prince the truth (真相)?” This question made me think about how fairy tales shape (影响) children’s minds.
Fairy tales are about magic and adventure. When we read together, Jane’s eyes sparkle (闪烁) with excitement. She loves imagining brave heroes (主角), talking animals and faraway kingdoms. These stories make her creative. After reading “Jack and the Beanstalk” (《杰克与豌豆》), she built a “beanstalk” out of pillows and pretended (假装) to climb it. Fairy tales also teach important lessons. Stories like “The Tortoise and the Rabbit” show that hard work pays off, while “The Lion and the Mouse” teach kindness.
However, I’ve met some problems too during our story time. Many fairy tales show characters as all good or all bad. This might make children think people in real life are the same. I have to explain to Jane that everyone has both good and bad sides. Another problem is that some fairy tales focus too much on (过分关注) beauty or wealth. Stories like “Cinderella” might make children think being beautiful or rich is the most important thing.
So, what is my advice? First, choose fairy tales with good messages. Second, talk to your children about the stories. Ask them questions like, “What would you do if you are the hero?” or “Do you think the story is fair?” This helps them think more.
Fairy tales are a wonderful way to teach children important lessons. Let’s play our part well and help them enjoy the magic while also learning from the stories.
