Who isn’t looking for happiness in life? Laurie Santos teaches lessons on the science of happiness at Yale University—it is very popular with the students. Our host(主持人) reached out to Laurie Santos for some ways to be happy.
Host: You once talked about a gratitude(感恩)study. Can you tell me more about it?
Laurie: Sure. In the study, a researcher asked students to answer two questions every day for two weeks. That is, what makes you thankful and what makes you unhappy today? He found that thinking about something good could make them happy, but thinking about bad things didn’t help with their well-being.
Host: So, gratitude is good for us. Can gratitude make us get on well with people?
Laurie: Of course. A study shows that if you show thanks to people, you can be closer to them. In the study, a student wrote down how a teacher helped him, but he didn’t show thanks to the teacher before. Then, the researcher made it into a letter and sent it to the teacher. Finally, the teacher read the letter and said it was a sweet moment in her life. Also, the student was surprised at his teacher’s words and he felt happy.
Host: So showing gratitude helped both the student and the teacher. It made them happy and feel closer to each other.
