“Don't forget to study for the history test on Friday,” Mrs Wales said before class was over.
Julie closed her book and felt sad. Why couldn't the test be on poetry (诗歌)? She was so good at poetry, but history? She was never good at memorising anything.
The following day, Julie decided to use library time to study. Maria joined her with many cards and coloured pencils. Each card showed a doodle.
“I thought you were studying history.” Julie was puzzled (困惑的).
“This is how I study,” Maria said. “I like art, and the pictures help me recall (使记起) facts.”
“I see,” said Julie, with interest.
“But right now, I'm working on this question.” Maria pointed to a line on the front of a card: Who lives in Flanders?
An idea jumped into Julie's mind. If Maria could use her love for art to study, then why couldn't Julie use her own love for poetry?
“A Fleming lives in Flanders. See the Fleming go home to Flanders.” Julie thought and then said aloud, “Yes! See the flamingo (火烈鸟) go home to Flanders! Fantastic!”
Maria used a pink coloured pencil to draw a flamingo on the back of the card. “Hey, that is pretty cool.”
“Thanks.” Julie smiled. She looked down at another card and read, “In what year did England defeat (击败) the Spanish Armada?”
“It was 1588,” Maria answered, reading from the book. “But how can I even draw that?”
“Maybe you don't need to.” Julie quickly wrote something down on her notebook, and then read it to Maria, “1588 made England celebrate.”
“Wonderful!” Maria said excitedly. “And we could show that with a cake, flowers and balloons.” She drew and asked, “Hey, want to be study partners (伙伴)?”
“Of course,” said Julie. Suddenly, studying history became fun to her.
