Recently, my daughter reminded me of someone we saw at the train station a few years ago.
That day, my daughter and I were waiting for our train. We went to buy some drinks, and then we saw the old man.Dressed poorly, he was standing in front of the counter(柜台) while counting coins slowly to buy just one bottle of water. The businessman behind him said impatiently, “Hey! Can't you be quick? Some of us have a train to catch!” Hearing this, the old man seemed to be very embarrassed, so he walked away quietly at once.
It was my turn.I bought our two drinks and the old man's water as well.We walked up to him and gave him the water with a smile. After walking away, my daughter complained, “Dad, the old man is so impolite. He didn't even say ‘thank you’ to us!” I told her that we did this not to get a “thank you” from other people. We just wanted to be nice.
Now, my daughter always reaches out to help people. She waves, makes eye contact and says “hi” to people on the street. She holds doors for people. She scoops up things that other people drop.
When I mentioned this recently, she seemed surprised.I asked her why she was so kind all the time. She said, “Because it is just right to be that way.” Then she added, “And because I see you do that all the time.”

“Stop it or I'll cry again.I don't think I will pass this exam,” said Anne.“Yes, you will.I want to go with you.Imagine how much fun it will be.” “Yes, but I will have to study a lot.It was so nice of your aunt Josephine to ask me to stay at her house,” said Anne.“You'll write to me, won't you?” asked Diana.
Anne went to Aunt Josephine's house on Monday.
On Wednesday Diana went to the post office. There was a letter from Anne.
Dear Diana,
It's Tuesday night and I'm writing this from Aunt Josephine's house.Last night I was really lonely in my room without you.
This morning I went to the Academy. There were lots of students.People were doing funny things before the exam. One boy was talking to himself.
Then we went into the exam. Some of the girls looked so relaxed. My heart was beating so quickly. Then we had the English exam. Diana, I felt like I did four years ago when I asked Marilla about staying at Green Gables. In the afternoon we had a History exam. I think I did OK. But Diana, tomorrow we will have Geometry. I am worried about that.
Yours,
Anne
The exams finished and Anne went home on Friday evening. She was very tired and happy.
Diana was waiting.
“It’s wonderful to see you. I miss you. Did you do well?” asked Diana.
“I think so, except Geometry. I don’t think I passed. It’s so good to be back. Green Gables is the best place in the world,” said Anne.
“When will you get the results?” asked Diana.
“In two weeks. They’ll be in the newspaper. Two weeks of waiting,” said Anne.
“You’ll pass. Don’t worry.”
“I want to pass with a higher score or not at all,” said Anne. She seemed angry. Diana understood that Anne wanted a higher score than Gilbert.
Anne and Gilbert were in competition with each other. They saw each other but didn’t speak. It was like they were strangers. Anne secretly hoped that she was friends with Gilbert again. But she also wanted to get a higher score than him in the exam. Everyone thought Gilbert was going to get the highest score. She wanted to make Matthew and Marilla proud. Well, mostly Matthew.
The results were late. Finally after three weeks of waiting, they arrived. Diana came running to the house with a newspaper.
“Anne, you’ve passed. You and Gilbert. You’re equal firsts,” said Diana.
Anne took the newspaper. Yes, their names were at the top of a list of two hundred pupils.
