Today most businesses are looking for people who are good team players. The ability to work with and get on with other people is so important that many large companies and organizations spend millions of dollars in finding the right people for their businesses.
At the recent Success in Business Conference, some of Europe’s most successful businessmen told us how they spot (发现) good team players.
“A good team needs people with different skills and talents. It is good to bring new ideas into the organization. The best people can work with other people and develop ideas with a team. It is important that everyone uses their talents in the business. I look for people who have the skills and talents my business needs, but they must be able to work in a team.” (John Brown, Design Works)
“At interviews I like to bring a group together and look for people who work well in a group. A good team player is usually friendly and easy to talk to. They are also good at listening to other people. They are generous and happy to share their ideas.” (Lee Chung, Computer World)
“Most teams need a mixture of people. It is great to have people with ideas but you also need people who get things done on time. A team made up of people that all have the same skills would not work. You need to know what you are looking for.” (Jane Lin, Lin Electricals)
“I look for people who can bring out the best in other people. In a group you can see the people who know how to get a team working together. They understand teams and they can make them work. A good team is the key to success.” (Jim Khan, Northern Bank)
Everyone agreed that teamwork is the key to business success!

In 1977, Irene Pepperberg of Harvard University began studying what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. Her first experiments began with Alex. Alex was a one - year - old African grey parrot and Irene taught him to make the sounds of the English language. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.”
At the time, most scientists didn’t believe animals had any thoughts. They thought animals were more like robots but didn’t have the ability to think or feel. Of course, if you own a pet, you probably disagree. But it is the job of a scientist to prove this and these days more scientists accept that animals can think for themselves.
“That’s why I started my studies with Alex,” Irene said. “Some people, in fact, called me crazy for trying this.”
These days, we have more and more proofs that animals have all kinds of mental abilities. Sheep can tell faces from each other. Chimpanzees use different kinds of tools and even use weapons to hunt. And Alex the parrot became a very good talker.
Thirty years after the Alex studies began, Irene was still giving him English lessons until his recent death. For example, if Alex was hungry, he could say “want grape”. Alex could count to six and was learning the sounds for seven and eight. “He has to hear the words over and over before he can correctly say them,” Irene said, after pronouncing “seven” for Alex a few times in a row. Alex could also tell the difference between colours, shapes, sizes, and materials (e.g. wood and metal). Before he finally died, Alex managed to say “seven”.
Another famous pet that proved some animals had greater mental skills was a dog called Rico. He appeared on a German TV game show in 2011. Rico knew the names of 200 different toys and easily learned the names of new ones. When Rico became famous, many other dog owners wanted to show how clever their pets were. Another dog called Betsy could understand 300 words.
One theory for dogs’ ability to learn a language is that they have been close companions to humans for many centuries and so their ability to understand us is constantly evolving (进化). While animals can’t do what humans do yet, some scientists believe that examples like Alex and Rico prove that evolution develops intellectual ability, as well as physical appearance.

The Vieira family moved to the United States in 1981. At that time, they decided to stop speaking French at home and communicate only in English. This was because they were living in an English - speaking country.
Now, the Vieira children have grown up. They sometimes travel back to France to visit their friends. However, they can’t communicate with them. This, regrettably, is quite common. When people move to a new country, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many advantages of knowing more than one language.
One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate directly with people from around the world. You do not have to depend on others to talk for you. People who know only one language usually need a translator to help them communicate.
Moreover, speaking a second language allows people to experience other cultures and customs better. Local expressions, words and even jokes can help a person understand another culture. So, knowing more than one language helps you gain knowledge of other cultures.
Finally, having more speakers who know more than one language improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can become more peaceful. Countries will have more respect for each other and will better understand each other’s problems.
The advantages of knowing more than one language are clear. Therefore, it is very sad that many people don’t try to learn another language. It is even worse when people choose to forget their mother language.
( )38. The passage begins with the experience of the Vieira family in order to __________.
A. discuss the need for teaching a second language
B. show the problems of speaking only one language
C. describe the advantages of moving to another country
D. introduce the passage’s main characters to readers

People always said Ricky looked just like his mother. “He has beautiful eyes, exactly like yours, Rosa!” said Mrs Sanchez, the crossing guard, as his mother took him to school one morning. “Thanks!” Ricky’s mother shouted, and gave a big smile to him. “Have a good day, my dear.” Then she gave him a kiss. Ricky went into school frowning (皱眉). He was a boy. Why didn’t people say he looked like his father?
That morning his teacher, Mrs Cortez brought out a large box from the closet. She took out a hat, a scarf and a sword (剑). “Class, for our next unit we’re going to do a play.” Mrs Cortez looked around the room. Her eyes settled on Ricky. “Ricky, do you want to carry the sword?” Ricky shook his head no. “Do you want to wear this white shirt?” she asked. Again Ricky shook his head to the cowboy hat, the captain’s hat, and the purple cape. But when Mrs Cortez took out a big bushy mustache, Ricky nodded yes. For the rest of the day, the class practised their parts.
When school was over, Mrs Cortez told the class to leave the costumes in their desks. Ricky took off his mustache. But instead of leaving it behind, he put it in his pockets. He wanted to take it home. He wanted to surprise his father when he got home from work. After Ricky left the school, he put the mustache back onto his lip (嘴唇). He felt grown - up. Ricky laughed and ran home. “Hi, Mom,” he said. “I’m hungry.” He looked up and waited for her to say something about his big bushy mustache. But she only smiled and handed him a slice of apple. “My dear, wash your hands and help me with the apples,” she said. Ricky’s smile was gone. Didn’t she notice? “Look, Mom. Isn’t my mustache great?” he said. His mother looked at him. “Mustache? What are you talking about?” “This one,” he said. He touched his lip, but the mustache was gone!
I must have lost it on the way home, Ricky thought. He went back along the road, but he couldn’t find it anywhere. The mustache was gone. When he got home, Ricky told his mother what had happened. She hugged (拥抱) him. At dinner, he wanted to tell Dad too, but the words would not come out. He watched his father’s big bushy mustache move up and down when he chewed. After dinner, Ricky went to his bedroom. With a black crayon, he coloured a sheet of paper and then cut it into the shape of a mustache. But it didn’t look real. In the closet, Ricky found a can of black shoe polish. He looked in the mirror and drew a line above his lip, but it was not thick and bushy at all. Finally, he cut the black strings of old shoes in short strips and tied them together with a rubber band. It looked like a black mop, and smelled like old socks. Then, Ricky went into the living room, where his father was listening to the radio. “Dad, I lost my mustache ...” His father laughed. “What mustache?” Ricky told him everything. His father smiled and told a story about a hen that tried to become a swan. It was a good story, but it still didn’t solve his problem. Tomorrow he would have to face Mrs Cortez.
The next morning, Ricky was chewing his cereal slowly. His father came into the kitchen. “Good morning,” he said. Then Ricky’s mother came into the kitchen. “My dear, I have a surprise for you,” she said. Mom took out a mustache. It was big and bushy. “You found it!” Ricky shouted happily. “Well, yes and no,” Mom said. Ricky put the new mustache to his lip. He ate his cereal, and the mustache moved up and down, just like his father’s. But something was different about his father’s smile. His lip looked funny. Ricky jumped up and threw his arms around Dad’s neck. “Thank you, Dad! Thank you!” he cried. “That’s okay,” Dad told him. “But next time listen to your teacher.” Then Dad touched his son’s hair softly. “And, hey, now I look just like you!” Ricky smiled happily.
