(A)
In the year of 496 BCE, during the Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China, the State of Wu attacked the State of Yue. During the war, the king of Wu was badly hurt and died soon after. His son, Fu Chai, became the new king. Fu Chai was filled with sadness and anger. He decided to take revenge for his father's death. For three years, he trained his army strictly, making it very strong. Finally, he led his soldiers to attack Yue again. This time, Wu won the war and captured Yue's king, Gou Jian.
In Wu, Gou Jian had to live in a small, dark house with a terrible smell. He was ordered to raise horses for the king and even had to clean the king's stables (马厩) himself sometimes. Yet Gou Jian did not say anything at all, but worked quietly and loyally. It seemed that he had truly accepted his fate. So three years later, Fu Chai set him free and allowed him to return to Yue.
When Gou Jian returned to Yue, he secretly trained his army. In order to keep his mind sharp, he slept on firewood and ate a snake's gallbladder (蛇胆) before meals every day. While in the daytime, he worked alongside his people in the fields and even trained himself with his army. After a few years, with the help of some wise man like Wen Zhong, his country became strong again. At last, in 473 BCE, when Wu grew weak, Gou Jian took hold of a golden chance to defeat Wu, and Fu Chai killed himself in shame.
