The Monster Nian
Once upon a time, in China, an ugly sea monster named Nian visited a village every Chinese New Year's Eve. He came out of the water and ate people! The villagers were very afraid. Every year, they ran away from their homes to hide.
One night on the Chinese New Year's Eve, a poor, old man came to the village. He needed food and a place to stay, but the villagers were too afraid to help. Only a kind, old woman gave him food and told him about Nian. She told him to leave.
The old man had a different plan. "Let me stay in your house tonight. I'll drive Nian away," he said. The woman agreed.
Then the night came. The village was quiet and empty, but one house was not. There, the old man put many candles inside to make the house bright. He also put red paper on the door and wore red clothes. When Nian came to the house, the old man laughed and set off fireworks. Nian was afraid of the bright lights, loud noise and the colour red. He ran away.
Since then, to keep Nian away, people celebrate Chinese New Year's Eve with lights, red decorations and fireworks. What an interesting tradition!
