Sweat(汗水) poured down Simon's face as he prepared for the basketball game—a game he was certain to win. After all, he was not just good, but excellent.
Basketball ran in Simon's family. His elder brother Reggie played at a top college, and Simon was expected to do the same. But his heart was no longer in it. He had another sport in his mind.
Riding the bus home, Simon watched cheerleaders perform with energy that attracted(吸引) him a lot. He took out a paper from his backpack. In bold letters, it read “Cheerleading Competition(啦啦队比赛)”—that was Simon's true desire.
Although cheerleading was seen as a girls' sport, Simon understood its importance in a game and the emotional(有感染力的) excitement it required. It was time to share his dream with his family.
Upon returning home, Simon was greeted by his parents and Reggie. “You're home?” Reggie asked. He was proud to support his little brother's basketball game, believing Simon would be better than him.
Everyone in the family was smiling except Simon. His family had such high expectations of him when it came to basketball. But Simon was tired of trying to keep up with his brother. He was ready to follow his heart.
“I don't think I want to play ball anymore,” he said. “I want to do something else. ” The family stood confused(困惑的). “Like what, son?” his father said, breaking the silence. “Cheerleading,” Simon replied. Nervous, unbelieving laughter followed that word. They thought he was joking. “That's what I really want to do,” Simon said in a voice that came out louder than expected. When they saw he was serious, they were quiet.
Over the next few weeks, his family began to understand and support him for the big event. During weeks of hard training, he could see that he was improving with practice. Then it was time for the competition. Dad, Mom, Reggie cheered Simon on. With the music played, he hit every beat the best he could. On Monday, the results were announced.
