Born in 1999 in a small village in Hebei Province, Pang Zhongwang grew up under difficult situations: his father was unable to communicate with others due to illness, his mother was disabled, and he himself had heart disease. He had to pick up trash to make a living. He had to take care of himself and his parents. Though he had to face these challenges, he remained optimistic. “This was thanks to my mother’s encouragement. She smiled every day—so why should I feel sad?” he recalled.
In 2017, he entered Tsinghua University through a special enrollment(入学) plan for students from poor families and rural areas. He scored 684 on the national college entrance exam, or gaokao. Later, he directly went to the university’s PhD program. But he felt sad that his mother passed away before seeing his achievement.
He spoke truthfully about his first uncertainty at Tsinghua. “When I first arrived at Tsinghua, I was excited but also a little lost,” Pang said.

He received a piece of advice from a teacher: “Every student begins with a blank slate here. It’s up to you to draw your future.” The idea inspired him to explore bravely and persevere through challenges.
“There were moments of self-doubt, but I learned to get the process. Getting up after falling down is part of who I am,” he said. “This is what my mother taught me.”
Pang’s devotion to his studies and determination to contribute to China’s development led him to be named as one of the “People Who Moved China” by China Central Television in 2024.
