五、阅读理解。
①When I was seven, my parents filled my pocket with coins on holidays. I directly went to a toy shop. Along the way, I heard a boy whistling(吹口哨). I loved the sound and offered all my money to learn the whistle. I then came home and went whistling all over the house. I was happy with my whistle, but all my family felt noisy. When my brother and sisters heard how much I had paid for learning the whistle, they told me I had been fooled. This made me think of all the good things I could have bought with the rest of the money.
②This experience, however, taught me something. I always remember the whistle when I want to buy some unnecessary things. I then said to myself, “Don't give too much for the whistle.” In that way, I have saved lots of money. As I grew up, I met with many people who gave too much for the whistle.
③When I saw people waste their time to become popular among those important people, I said to myself, “This man gives too much for his whistle.”
④When I met with a man of pleasure, giving up his health for his dream, I said to myself, “You are providing pain for yourself. You give too much for your whistle.”
⑤If I see one who likes fine clothes, fine houses or fine furniture, for which he becomes poor, I thought he has paid too much for his whistle.
⑥In short, I believe that a great part of the unhappiness of people is caused by the wrong understanding of the value of things, and by their giving too much for their whistle.
