Host: Welcome! Today, we have a special guest Alex, who is a fan of Agatha Christie, a famous British writer known for her detective novels. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and why you’re such a big fan of Agatha Christie?
Guest: Hi! I’m Alex, and I’ve been a huge fan of Agatha Christie since I was in primary school. Her stories are so full of mystery.
Host: That’s great, Alex! Do you know how Agatha started her writing career?
Guest: Well, I do actually. Agatha was largely educated at home. She wrote her first book because her sister Madge challenged her to do it. At first, it was really hard for her to get published. She tried for about five years before finally breaking through with The Mysterious Affair at Styles (《斯泰尔斯庄园奇案》) in 1920. This marked the beginning of her incredible career as a writer.
Host: Wow, that’s quite a journey! What made her storytelling so unique and successful?
Guest: Agatha had an amazing imagination and unmatched storytelling abilities. She created two of the most beloved fictional detectives: Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. In fact, her books have sold over two billion copies and have been translated into over 100 languages!
Host: Those numbers are mind-blowing!
Guest: Yes! Agatha broke another record with the thickest book ever. It is a collection of Miss Marple stories, including 12 novels and 20 short stories, with 4,032 pages in total. She was also the first writer to release 100,000 copies of 10 different novels on the same day. Also, her play The Mousetrap (《捕鼠器》) has been performed in London for over 70 years!
Host: That’s truly remarkable! How do you think Agatha’s legacy will continue to influence future generations?
Guest: I believe her legacy will live on for a long time. You know, she is often called one of the world’s best-selling novelists. I think her stories will inspire many more writers and readers in the future.
Host: Thank you, Alex, for sharing your insights about Agatha Christie.
