On Sunday morning, a strong earthquake hit Indonesia and then a big tsunami followed. It quickly spread to other countries in the south and Southeast Asia, as well as east Africa.
Tsunamis are especially dangerous for children. Many people died because of the tsunami. 30% of them were children, and most of them were 5 to 12 years old.
In open seas a tsunami is only one or two meters high. When it is near the land, it is usually as high as 10 meters. Houses and cars near the sea can be taken away by these big waves. Because a tsunami moves fast and can travel across the sea in one day, it may affect places far away.
The Pacific Ocean has many strong tsunamis because there are many earthquakes around it. Luckily, China doesn't see tsunamis often because its sea floor is quite flat. And the islands around China may help the country avoid them.
