Friendship myths
Friendship is important to teenagers all over the world. However, they sometimes expect too much from it. Here are three myths that some teenagers believe about friendship. But in fact, they aren’t true.
Myth No. 1: Real friends must be available 24/7.
Myth No. 2: The more friends you have, the cooler you are.
Myth No. 3: Fighting means the end of friendship.
Here’s what some teenagers from different countries said.
Aisha, 14, Cape Town, South Africa
My friend Zara and I argued about who broke her headphones. For weeks, we didn’t speak until our teacher, Ms Miller, sat us down and said, “Friendship is woven through forgiveness (原谅).” We realised that having a fight wasn’t the end of friendship. It was just a knot (结) in our thread (线).
Noah, 17, Vancouver, Canada
In my freshman year, I bragged (吹嘘) about having 500+ friends on social media. But when I got really sick, only three people came to see me: my childhood neighbour Raj, my debate partner Leah, and my grandma. That’s when I realised that real friendship is about showing up, not showing off. Now I’d rather have a few true “snowstorm friends” (who’ll dig your car out at 6 a.m.) than a thousand followers. A few good friends are more important than lots of friends, right?

During exam week, I was so busy studying that I didn’t reply to my best friend Emi’s messages for three days.
