People have been celebrating birthdays for years. The song, Happy Birthday to You, first came out in the late 1800s. However, the song isn't sung in every country. People in different countries celebrate birthdays differently.
In the USA, a birthday cake is important for the celebration. Candles are put on top of the cake.
In the past, Chinese people only celebrate some birthdays: the first, 10th, 60th, 70th, and 80th. Chinese people believe that when a person reaches the age of 60, he or she has completed a full cycle(循环) of life. On this birthday, the person's children, grandchildren, and other family members try their best to come together to express congratulations(祝贺). Food usually includes a bowl of long-life noodles.
In Egypt, family and friends are invited to a party and people sing and dance. People usually bring flowers and fruit to the party.
Young Egyptian children only take part in the 7-5-3 birthday celebrations. Because children often died young in old times, when a boy reaches the age of five, or a girl reaches the age of three or seven, the child puts on his or her best clothes and goes to the shrine to give thanks for health. The child may get a bag of candies on that day.
These are just a few of the many different birthday traditions(传统) around the world. Each tradition brings good wishes and meanings to the birthday person.
