I looked at the club sign-up forms on the noticeboard. The choices swam before me: the Outdoor Club, the Computer Club, the Photography Club and more, all looking inviting. But I could only pick one.
The Debate (辩论) Club was an easy choice for me. I remembered the cheerful debate experiences in my old school. However, in this new school, debating was thought "boring" and photography "cool". Many students tried to choose photography. I quickly added my name after theirs, but my pen kept going dry. It felt like even the pen knew I should have signed up for debate. I told myself photography would be fun—it had to be if I needed to feel I belonged.
In the Photography Club, I knew I made the wrong choice. I didn't own a camera, and others discussed camera settings. The black-and-white photos on the wall seemed to silently tell me I shouldn't be here. I was completely lost.
I asked to leave for a drink, but I headed straight to the Debate Club instead. Outside the door, I listened to the advisor, Ms Holmes, introducing the debate topics, which sounded like pleasant music. This was just where I belonged. I stepped inside, and all faces turned toward me.
"Excuse me, Ms Holmes," I said nervously. "Can I still join the team?" I must have looked so sad, because she smiled. "If you really want to join us, you can be a stand-in, taking the place of anyone absent(缺席的). It means you have to learn to argue from both sides."
No one on our team missed a meet, so I didn't debate that season. But I still felt happy, because I realized something important: being true to myself was more important than being popular. In fact, it was the only way to be truly cool.
