(B)
Have you ever heard of butter made from air instead of cows? Savor, a company supported by Bill Gates, has come up with a method of producing butter out of just carbon dioxide ( CO₂ ) and hydrogen (H₂).
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, animal farming makes up 14.5% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions(排放). Reducing meat and dairy products is one of the key ways that humans can reduce their influence on the environment, as animal farming is a main source of greenhouse gases. And Savor says its products will have a lower carbon footprint than those made from animals.
Meat and dairy alternatives (乳制品替代品)have become more and more popular in recent years. But some taste bad. Savor says the taste of its butter is good. The question now is whether buyers will accept such lab-made butter. Getting people to give up their favorite dairy and meat for more lab-made foods may be a challenge.
Bill Gates wrote online, “The idea of turning to lab-made butter may seem strange at first. But the process doesn’t emit any greenhouse gases, and it uses no farmland and less than one thousandth of the water that traditional farming does. And most importantly, it tastes really good-like the real thing, because chemically it is.”
“We are testing the process at present. And we are not sure when we will be able to sell our butter. We are not expecting to be able to move forward with any kind of sales until at least 2025,”Kathleen Alexander, Savor’s manager, said. “Making butter out of CO, and H, is just the beginning. And we also plan to make milk, cheese and ice cream in the near future.”
