A Chinese teacher is offering foreigners classes about Chinese culture. Instead of textbooks, he is using a new kind of lesson plan—brush strokes. He is Jiang Hongsh-eng.
Jiang Hongsheng loves classic Chinese calligraphy and paintings very much. In 2012, he started this class to give foreigners free lessons on traditional Chinese arts. His students think it’s a wonderful experience that everyone should get to know. Later, he turned his love into a full-time job. He even spread traditional Chinese culture online.
“Before, I was invited to teach German students how to draw a peony blossom(牡丹花) and they were so amazed at it. So I thought it might be a good way to spread Chinese culture, ” Jiang said. Here, people can learn everything from the most basic skills, like how to use the brush and create the perfect colors, as well as how to draw a peony blossom, the symbol of wealth and happiness in Chinese culture.
Besides the weekly painting classes, Jiang Hongsheng often takes his students on field trips to enjoy more traditional Chinese culture. “I always feel very proud when my students finish a piece. The peony not only blossoms on the paper but also blossoms in my heart. I hope my students will become friendship ambassadors(大使) that intro-duce Chinese arts to others, ” Jiang said.
Every time Jiang has a student from a new country, he adds one peony to his world map. So far, Jiang has taught over 1,900 students from 91 countries. But for him, it’s just the start. “The blooming red peony will become one of the cards of Chinese cul-ture for the world, ” Jiang said.
