The Great Lakes are the largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth. They are in eastern North America, between Canada and the United States. There are five lakes in the group: Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
Lake Superior is the biggest and deepest of them. It covers more than 82,000 square kilometers. Lake Michigan is the only lake that is all inside the US. The other four lakes are shared by the two countries.
About 97.5% of Earth's water is salt water. Only about 2.5% is fresh water. The Great Lakes hold about 21% of the world's surface fresh water. The lakes are connected by rivers and canals(运河). Water from the lakes finally runs into the Atlantic Ocean. They are very important for transportation, fishing and fun.
