Dongyang is a small city in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province. Dongyang
woodcarving(木雕）has a long history that dates back to the Tang Dynasty. Guilhem Bouissou, a young man from France, has spent more than ten years in learning Dongyang woodcarving since he came to the city. In 2012, Bouissou visited Hangzhou's Leifeng Tower. He was excited and surprised by Dongyang woodcarving's techniques. Lu Tingfeng is a woodcarving master who took part in creating the artwork in the Leifeng Tower. Through a friend's introduction, Bouissou began learning woodcarving from him.
“He is full of imagination, which is important for art making. Woodcarving is just a way to make artworks, and artistic ideas are the soul,” said Lu. Bouissou's way is different from local artists. He prefers a natural method, resulting in unusual creations. Bouissou's woodcarving joins Eastern and Western art together, like the Beijing opera face carvings in his studio.
