While many people struggle to buy a house, a growing number of people in Britain are choosing to live on boats instead.
According to The Economist, there were about 35, 000 boats on canals(运河)in England and Wales in 2022, an increase of 33 percent over the past 20 years. Many of these boats are used as people's homes.
Liam Quinn, 37, lived on a narrowboat(运河船)in and around London for several years, enjoying the
lifestyle. “I loved waking up to the water and swans(天鹅). One month, I'd be in the heart of the city, and the next, parked next to cows in the countryside,” he said.
Besides the beauty and exploration, living on a boat is also cheaper and gives people a sense of independence.
The cost of buying a narrowboat is usually between 50, 000 pounds(about 456, 000 yuan)and 100, 000 pounds for smaller to medium-sized boats. That's cheaper than buying an apartment in London, where in the richest areas, prices average around 600, 000 pounds. However, boat life isn't always easy. There are many things to consider. “It's hard work taking care of the boat all the time and moving it every two weeks to follow the rules for people living on boats. Emptying the toilet and filling the boat with water were everyday tasks. I used launderettes(自助洗衣店)for clothes, as having a washing machine on a boat doesn't work,” said Quinn.
Even with problems, Quinn enjoyed his time owning a boat. “You become very practical(务实的), learning to take care of the boat yourself. Everyone is friendly and helpful, with an ‘all-in-it-together’ kind of feel,” Quinn said.
